Photo gallery from an old trip to Chicago in 2003

While I was in the States in the summer of 2003, I had the chance to travel around and one of these places I got to visit was Chicago. As I’m a fan of architecture, design etc. most of what I’ve taken back then is shots from buildings as it’s quite obvious in my Chicago gallery.
Probably if it wasn’t for Goro Botevist-a to host me I wouldn’t have gone on my own having to sleep in hostels etc. I found that it isn’t that impossible to find Bulgarians abroad who would be kind enough to host you for a couple of days – I would usually try to find somebody to host me through bulgarian forums or through ICQ. Another importan info-source for adventourus travellers is globalFreeLoaders.com where you sign up and start looking for travel-fellows who would give you place to stay in, free.
I explored Chicago extensively together with Iva Genova, a colleague of mine at the Uni. In Chicago it is no surprise to hear Bulgarian language on the streets, coffees, malls etc. I even went to a store where you buy all the stuff like Lyutenica, lukanka etc.
In general my slight impression of what I could see for 5 days is that I won’t fit living into the city easily… it feels very surreal with all these soulless buildings, empty streets after 10am, and pretty high crime rate. It’s okey to see it at least once for all the skyscrapers, the magnificent skyline at night from the Navy Pier.
Best is to study in the suburban campus of Northwestern university where a master degree program usually costs around $50k ;-)
